PKM Karsa Cipta “Smart Alert” Conducts Prototype Socialization at SMKN 2 Lubuk Basung

Under the guidance of a lecturer from the Automotive Engineering Department, Ahmad Arif, S.Pd., M.T., and Wawan Purwanto, S.Pd., M.T., Ph.D., the team lead by Riko Saputra, a student of the Automotive Department UNP TM 2020 with the team successfully passed the 2021 Funding for the Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa in the Field of Cipta Karsa (PKM-KC). The team consisting of Gilang M. Rahmadi (Otomotif 20), Dedi Mulyono (Otomotif 17), and Yuvani Oksarianti (Statistika 18) came up with new innovative ideas to reduce the number of driving accidents on the highway, especially in case studies of accidents caused by motorcycle chain that can wrapped around a skirt/hijab, robe, or long hijab worn by women. The team calls the tool created “Smart Alert” which means smart reminder.

This tool was inspired by the rise of motorcycle passengers who fell because their skirts or hijabs were wrapped around the motorcycle chain.  In monitoring, the team itself saw a similar incident directly in the Universitas Negeri Padang area which resulted in a passenger falling because the skirt he was wearing was wrapped around the chain of the motorcycle he was riding.  Incidents like this have often happened because many underestimate the clothes they wear when riding a motorcycle.

Smart Alert utilizes several simple electronic components such as batteries, sensors, microcontrollers, buzzers and LEDs and LCDs as a circuit.  As a smart device, Smart Alert can anticipate skirt twisting while driving. This tool is placed at the bottom near the motorcycle chain which is designed to be as minimal and efficient as possible, so that it does not affect the initial design made by the vehicle manufacturer itself. The sound issued by Smart Alert will be heard quickly before the passenger’s skirt or hijab gets caught in the chain or fingers.  While the light from the LED will be a marker that is easily visible when the buzzer is not heard if the conditions around the driver are very noisy.  With Smart Alert, potential accidents can be avoided and minimized.

SMKN 2 Lubuk Basung is one of the Vocational High Schools located in Agam Regency, West Sumatra.  On July 31, 2021 ago, the PKM-KC team from UNP conducted a socialization involving teachers, educators, and light vehicle engineering students on a limited basis and strict health protocols.  SMKN 2 Lubuk Basung was chosen because of the school’s openness and high enthusiasm for welcoming new technologies in the automotive sector.  The head of SMKN 2 Lubuk Basung welcomed the arrival of the UNP PKM-KC Team.

Not only the Smart Alert prototype, the team also brought a prototype of the Microcontroller-Based Automatic Valve Cleaning Tool to be introduced at SMKN 2 Lubuk Basung.  The team targets that the Automotive Workshop from SMKN 2 Lubuk Basung can be the first place that can implement the use of this PKM prototype in the future.
